A Lagos High Court has adjourned the hearing of the defamation suit involving social media commentator Vincent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan, and prominent human rights lawyer Femi Falana, SAN, alongside his son, Folarin Falana, widely known as Falz.
The case, initially slated for hearing on Thursday, was postponed until January 23, 2025, due to the absence of key applications from the court’s records.
VDM, clad in a striking red traditional outfit, appeared in court accompanied by vocal supporters.
However, the Falanas were notably absent, prompting Justice Matthias Dawodu to reschedule the proceedings.
The lawsuit stems from a video posted by VDM on September 24, 2025, in which he alleged that the Falanas received ₦10 million from Idris Okuneye, also known as Bobrisky, to obstruct justice.
Both father and son have denied the claims, describing them as baseless and damaging to their reputations.
In separate lawsuits, each plaintiff is demanding ₦500 million in damages.
They argue that VDM knowingly published false and unverified statements, which have continued circulating on social media, further tarnishing their reputations.
On October 14, Justice Dawodu granted the Falanas an interim injunction, ordering VDM to remove the video and refrain from making further defamatory statements against them pending the determination of the case.
The court also directed that all court documents be served to VDM through his counsel, Deji Adeyanju.
In response to the ruling, VDM has sought leave to appeal, arguing that a refusal to grant his request could result in an injustice.
“A refusal to grant leave may result in the enforcement of a decision that does not reflect a correct application of the law, leading to outcomes that may be detrimental not only to the parties involved but also to the administration of justice as a whole,” VDM stated.
He emphasized the importance of appellate courts in ensuring that trial court decisions adhere to legal principles and safeguard the judicial system’s integrity.
