A Magistrate Court sitting in Sagamu, Ogun State, has adjourned the case against the driver involved in the fatal road accident that claimed the lives of two close friends of former world heavyweight boxing champion, Anthony Joshua, to January 20, 2026.

The Ogun State Police Command confirmed that the driver, Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, 46, was arraigned on Friday before the court.

The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, disclosed this in a statement issued in Abeokuta.

“The driver of the Lexus SUV involved in the accident was arraigned before a Sagamu Magistrate Court today. The matter has been adjourned till January 20, 2026, to allow for further proceedings,” Babaseyi said.

The arraignment came two days after the police confirmed Adeniyi’s arrest over the crash, which occurred on December 29, 2025, near Danco along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

The accident led to the death of Kevin Latif Ayodele, 36, a British-Nigerian citizen, and Sina Ghami, 36, a British citizen. Both men were colleagues and members of Joshua’s training and support team.

Adeniyi, who has worked for years as part of Joshua’s Nigerian logistics team, was initially treated for minor injuries at a Lagos hospital and discharged late on New Year’s Eve. He was later taken to the Ogun State Police Command headquarters in Abeokuta for questioning.

Police sources had earlier said the driver was allegedly travelling above the 65mph speed limit when a tyre burst during an overtaking attempt, causing him to lose control of the vehicle.

The Lexus SUV, with registration number KRD 850 HN, reportedly crashed into an illegally parked truck loaded with soya beans on the roadside. The impact was said to be severe, ripping off part of the vehicle.

Ayodele and Ghami died on the spot, while Joshua and Adeniyi survived with minor injuries. Joshua was seated behind the driver and escaped death narrowly.

Local first responders at the scene reportedly described his survival as a “miracle”.

A police source had earlier told the Daily Mail, “The driver was released after treatment for minor injuries and was then taken to the state police headquarters for questioning. He is in a stable condition and was able to give his account of what happened.”

The source added that Adeniyi was expected to face charges related to reckless driving, though public holidays could delay the process.

On Wednesday, the Lagos and Ogun state governments confirmed that Joshua had been discharged from Lagoon Hospital, Ikoyi, after doctors certified him fit to continue his recovery at home.

In a joint statement signed by the Special Adviser on Information and Strategy to Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, Kayode Akinmade, and Lagos State Commissioner for Information, Gbenga Omotosho, the governments said Joshua and his mother visited a funeral home in Lagos to pay their last respects.

The bodies of the two victims were later flown out of Lagos on a Turkish Airlines cargo flight to London via Istanbul for burial arrangements.

The statement also expressed appreciation to President Bola Tinubu for his “fatherly support” and thanked medical personnel at Lagoon Hospital for their professionalism.

“The governments of Ogun and Lagos states deeply appreciate the prayers, concern and goodwill shown by Nigerians and others across the world,” the statement read.

They also extended condolences to the families of the deceased, describing the incident as painful and deeply unfortunate.

The accident happened at about 11am on Monday, December 29, as Joshua and his friends were travelling from Lagos to an undisclosed destination shortly after arriving in Nigeria from London on a Virgin Atlantic flight.

The crash occurred barely 10 days after Joshua’s widely publicised boxing bout with Jake Paul, which ended in a sixth-round knockout win for the Nigerian-born boxer.

Following the incident, several sports stars, including Super Eagles players Victor Osimhen, Wilfred Ndidi and Bright Osayi-Samuel, sent messages of support and sympathy to Joshua.

Meanwhile, police have launched a search for the driver of the truck involved in the accident, who reportedly fled the scene. Investigations into the crash are ongoing.

The court is expected to hear more details on the charges and police findings when the case resumes on January 20, 2026.
