The Nigerian Police Force has revealed how some officers stole ₦43,160,000 from a cargo worker at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, in August 2023.

The police spokesperson, ACP Muyiwa Ogunjobi, said the officers, led by Inspector Esther Okafor on the orders of DSP Peter Ejike, unlawfully arrested Andrew Ejah, an employee of FATFAD Cargo Nigeria Limited. Ejah was transporting ₦74,950,000 for his clients.

The officers, including Inspector Ekende Edwin and Sergeant Talabi Kayode, detained Ejah at the Zone 7 Headquarters, Abuja, and falsely reported that they recovered only ₦31,790,000. They demanded a percentage of the money to suppress the case.

Outraged by the officers’ actions, the money owners petitioned the Force Headquarters. An investigation by the IGP Monitoring Unit revealed that the officers had conspired to steal part of the money.

“Forensic investigations showed the officers stole ₦43,160,000 and attempted to hide their misconduct by claiming their phone, which had photos of the money and suspect, was damaged,” Ogunjobi explained.

The officers also spread false narratives online to divert attention from their crime.

“The officers acted greedily and unprofessionally,” Ogunjobi said. “They have been suspended for serious misconduct, tampering with evidence, and abuse of office. They will face prosecution after legal and administrative procedures are concluded.”

The police assured Nigerians that such actions do not reflect the Force’s values.

The NPF also refuted claims that the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, was shielding any cartel, calling the allegations baseless and aimed at tarnishing the Force’s reputation.

“The public and media are urged to avoid spreading false narratives that undermine trust and distract from ongoing police reforms,” Ogunjobi said.
