A Nigerian interfaith specialist Hajiya Ramatu Tijjani has called on all Nigerian Landlord to forfeit two-month rents to their over the coronavirus pandemic and the subsequent lockdown.

WuzupNigeria reports that the coronavirus pandemic has forced the President, Maj Gen Muhammadu Buhari [retd], to declare lockdown in Lagos, Ogun and the FCT. Governors across the country have also ordered either partial or total lockdown of their states, a situation which has paralysed economic activities and affected incomes of individuals nationwide.

Hajiya Tijjani says this is the best time for landlords to show care to their tenants that have been living in their home for many years. She said forfeiting two-month rent will enable the tenants – both in ghettos and GRAs – to obey the government instruction to stay-at-home.

She said this on Monday while commenting on increasing domestic violence among married couples amid corona-virus lockdown and quarantine season.

She noted that it is important for all the landlord to show concern, love, care to all their tenants at this time, stressing also that it is important that landlords offer support and understanding at this critical time, not disturbing their tenant for house rent payment.

Hajiya Tijjani added that most of the tenants are small scale businessmen and women, and the lockdown has crippled their business, hence the need for better understanding between landlord and the tenant at this crucial moment.

“Though some tenants are struggling to pay the rent despite lockdown, some landlord keep insisting for their monthly rents.”

She appealed to landlords to halt collecting rents from their tenants in order for them to stay at home and obey the principles of social and physical distancing to avert spreading of the virus.
