The founder of Cable News Network, Ted Turner, has died at the age of 87.
The American media mogul passed away on Wednesday, May 6, 2026, according to a statement from Turner Enterprises, as reported by multiple international news outlets.
Turner was widely regarded as a pioneer in global broadcasting, having launched Cable News Network (CNN) in 1980—the world’s first 24-hour television news channel. His innovation transformed how audiences consume news, making round-the-clock reporting a global standard.
No official cause of death has been disclosed. However, Turner had previously revealed in 2018 that he was diagnosed with Lewy body dementia, a degenerative neurological condition.
Beyond CNN, Turner built a vast media empire through Turner Broadcasting System, which included networks such as TNT and Cartoon Network. He was also known for his involvement in sports, including ownership of the Atlanta Braves baseball team, and for his significant philanthropic efforts.
