American singer Chris Brown has been granted bail by a London court after being charged with allegedly attacking a music producer with a bottle in a nightclub last year.
The 36-year-old star, known for hit songs like Under the Influence and Loyal, was not in court on Wednesday when the judge at Southwark Crown Court set his bail at £5 million (over ₦9.5 billion).
Brown had been in custody since his arrest in Salford last Thursday. His first bail request was denied on Friday, but on Wednesday, he was granted bail on the condition that he immediately pay £4 million, with the remaining £1 million to be paid within a week.
The singer is accused of causing serious harm to a producer in an “unprovoked attack” at the Tape nightclub in Mayfair, London, in 2023. He has not yet been asked to enter a plea.
Chris Brown’s lawyer said the singer plans to continue with his planned world tour, which is expected to begin in Amsterdam on 8 June. He is also scheduled to perform in Manchester, London, Cardiff, Birmingham, and Glasgow in June and July.
Judge Tony Baumgartner, who presided over the hearing, said Brown must not contact the alleged victim, must not visit the Tape nightclub, and must stay at an address known to the court. He also must not apply for international travel documents and must surrender his passport when not on tour.
Brown must appear in court again on 20 June, which falls between his concerts in Cardiff and London.
He will return alongside his co-defendant, 38-year-old Omololu Akinlolu, also known as HoodyBaby. Akinlolu, who is also from the US, is said to have been involved in the same incident.
Brown, a two-time Grammy winner, has a long history in the spotlight, both for his music and legal troubles. He was previously convicted in 2009 for assaulting fellow artist Rihanna.
