American singer Chris Brown has been arrested in the United Kingdom over an alleged nightclub attack that happened last year.

The music star was taken into police custody on Thursday morning, May 14, while staying at the Lowry Hotel in Manchester. UK police said the arrest is linked to a violent incident at a nightclub in London in February 2023.

“The arrest relates to an incident at a venue in Hanover Square on February 19, 2023,” the Metropolitan Police told The Sun. “The investigation is being led by detectives from the Central West Area Basic Command Unit.”

Chris Brown is accused of attacking a music producer, Abe Diaw, during a party at The Tape nightclub in London. Diaw claimed that Brown hit him in the head multiple times with a bottle of tequila. He said after he fell, Brown continued to punch and kick him.

Diaw later went to the hospital for treatment and said he needed crutches to walk while recovering from the injuries. In 2023, Diaw told reporters:

“He’s making out it was one of his entourage but it was him. I’ve spoken to the police and they hope to resolve the matter soon.”

After the alleged attack, Brown did not return to the UK until this week. He reportedly flew into Manchester on Wednesday, May 13, using a private jet. Once police confirmed he was in town, officers went to the hotel and arrested him.

Brown is now being questioned by investigators. The singer has not yet responded publicly to the arrest or the claims made by Diaw.

In addition to the police investigation, Diaw filed a $16 million lawsuit against Chris Brown for the injuries he says he suffered. The case is still ongoing.
