The Sokoto State Ministry of Health has confirmed 25 deaths and treated 1,160 cases of cholera-related illnesses across 18 local government areas in the state since January 2024.

The Director of Public Health, Dr. Abdulganiyu Yusuf, disclosed on Tuesday that most of the fatalities occurred at home, with 23 deaths recorded outside health facilities and only two in hospitals.

Yusuf explained that the ministry provided adequate drugs and consumables to health centers to manage the outbreak effectively. “During outbreaks, we conduct surveillance, active case searches, and social mobilization to ensure cases are promptly identified and treated,” he said.

The outbreak, which worsened during the rainy season, has now declined, with 15 active cases currently being managed. These include seven in Sokoto North, six in Silame, and two in Kware local government areas.

Sokoto State Health Commissioner, Hajiya Asabe Balarabe, confirmed the figures, stating that cholera cases were identified through laboratory tests and treated in primary healthcare centers and hospitals. She commended the state government’s quick response in distributing medications to affected areas.

“At present, 15 active cases are being treated, and medications have been supplied to all 18 local government areas to stop the spread,” Balarabe said.
