Chinonye Chukwu to direct Hollywood adaption of Elaine Brown’s memoir, ‘A Taste of Power’

Nigerian-born director, Chinonye Chukwu will direct the film adaptation of American activist, Elaine Brown’s 1992 memoir, ‘A Taste of Power’.

Chukwu, a seasoned director and film activist known for her work in ‘Igbo Kwenu’, is currently enjoying positive reviews for her latest project ‘Clemency’ following its premiere at 2019 Sundance Film Festival.

‘Igbo Kwenu’ was a recipient of the PIFVA Subsidy Grant from the independent film community and both the “Best Motion Picture Award” and “Best Screenplay Award” at the 2009 Diamond Screen Festival.

In 2012, she completed her first feature narrative, ‘Alaskaland’, the story of an estranged Nigerian-American brother and sister who reunite in their Alaskan hometown.

Speaking on the choice of Chukwu, one of the film’s producers, Robbie Brenner said her works resonated with the message of the memoir and film making her suitable to direct it.

He said, “ cannot think of a more fearless filmmaker than Chinonye Chukwu, whose nuanced filmmaking, coupled with her activism and outreach, makes her the perfect person to tackle Elaine’s incredible story.”

Elaine Brown was selected by Huey Newton as his successor upon his exile to Cuba. She led the Black Panther Party through turbulent times in Oakland, from 1974-1977.

During her time as chairwoman, the Black Panther Party scored political success, amidst threats from both local and federal police as well as disaffected party members, all of which Brown documented in her 1992 memoir, A Taste of Power.

Brown has been listed as one of the executive producers, developing the project alongside Brenner and Alyssa Hill, who wrote the screenplay. (NAN)
