Chevron reports zero pipeline sabotage in one year

Chevron has recorded no incidents of pipeline sabotage in the past year, according to the Chairman/Managing Director of Chevron Nigeria and the Mid-Africa business unit, Mr. Jim Swartz.

He said this during a visit to the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission headquarters in Abuja.

In his words, “Chevron has not recorded any oil theft or attacks on our pipelines this year. This is the longest we’ve gone without oil theft.”

Chevron is a member of the Oil Producers Trade Section, a subgroup of the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

The private industry association is dedicated to the sustainable exploration and production of Nigeria’s oil and gas resources. It represents about 31 companies responsible for roughly 85 percent of the nation’s oil output.

Meanwhile, Chevron’s milestone is seen as closely linked to the progress made by Tantita Security Services Nigeria Limited (TSSNL), a private pipeline surveillance outfit owned by High Chief Government Ekpemupolo, popularly known as Tompolo. TSSNL’s proactive model—leveraging technology and local intelligence—has strengthened monitoring and control in oil-producing areas, contributing to Nigeria’s increased production levels from 2022 to date.

Further findings show that the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) and international oil companies have ramped up output to about 1.8 million barrels per day, a significant recovery from previous periods when production hovered around 600,000 barrels per day.

Additional checks indicate that with stable production levels, the Federal Government is targeting 2.06 million barrels per day, a benchmark revealed last week in the Medium-Term Expenditure Framework (MTEF) by the Minister of Budget and National Planning, Senator Atiku Bagudu.

The Chief Executive Officer of NUPRC welcomed Chevron’s report of zero oil theft incidents.

He credited the achievement to policy measures introduced under President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

TSSNL continues to play a pivotal role in safeguarding critical national assets essential to Nigeria’s economic wellbeing.

Its efforts have boosted crude oil output and strengthened the nation’s foreign earnings from petroleum exports.

Beyond enhancing security for oil production and export operations, the company has also provided employment opportunities for Niger Delta youths, addressing one of the root causes of unrest in the region.
