Chevron Nigeria Limited has announced that it has reduced gas flaring by more than 97% in its operations, as part of its efforts to protect the environment.
The company made this known while joining the rest of the world to mark World Environment Day on Wednesday, June 5.
This year’s theme, “Beat Plastic Pollution,” focuses on reducing plastic waste, which harms oceans, rivers, wildlife, and human health.
CNL, which operates a joint venture with the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), said the theme matches its mission of providing cleaner energy while caring for the environment.
Jim Swartz, Chairman and Managing Director of Chevron Nigeria, said the company is serious about reducing its impact on the environment.
“This year’s theme is consistent with our values,” he said. “We always consider the environment in our decisions. We aim to reduce our footprint and operate in a responsible way.”
He explained that Chevron is lowering the amount of carbon released from its operations and using modern tools to detect harmful gas leaks.
“CNL uses Optical Gas Imaging cameras to find gas leaks. In the past 10 years, we have cut routine gas flaring by over 97%,” he said.
Gas flaring is the burning of natural gas during oil production. It causes pollution and wastes energy.
Olusoga Oduselu, the company’s General Manager for Policy, Government and Public Affairs, added that Chevron also works to protect nature and support communities.
“We’ve worked with communities, regulators, and conservation groups to protect biodiversity,” he said. “For over 60 years, we have promoted development that protects the environment.”
Jim Swartz also noted that the company is doing more to manage waste and cut down the use of single-use plastics.
“We are reducing the use of plastic water bottles by using dispensers. We have also bought machines to crush and compact waste for recycling. This helps stop plastic from polluting our environment,” he said.
He added that CNL’s Operational Excellence Management System helps the company reach high standards in health, safety, and the environment.
“As the world focuses on beating plastic pollution, we will keep working with others to raise awareness and drive real change,” Jim said. “Our goal is to protect the environment for ourselves and future generations.”
