European champions, Chelsea defeated Southampton 3-1 on Saturday to move two points clear atop the Premier League table.

The Blues ended their two-game defeat to Manchester City in the EPL and Juventus in the Champions League to deny the Saints a first win of the new season.

Trevoh Chalobah 9th minute opener lit up Stamford Bridge but James Ward-Prowse’s 61st-minute penalty silenced the Blues in the second half.

Ward-Prowse moved from hero to villain after a poor tackle on Jorginho in the 77th minute earned him a straight red card.

It appeared as though both sides were going to settle for shared points until Timo Werner restored the lead with his first goal of the season six minutes to the end of regular time.

Ben Chilwell made up for giving away the penalty to Soton by sealing the 3-1 win in the 89th minute.

Chelsea are now two points clear of Liverpool who face City tomorrow, Manchester United and Everton who have 14 points apiece.

Meanwhile, Burnley, Newcastle and Norwich are the only other teams without a win after seven matches like Southampton.
