The Chawai community in Kauru Local Government Area of Kaduna State has set up a 13-member committee to mobilize relief materials for victims of recent attacks on its rural communities.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that Ungwan-Magaji, kitunkum and Kikoba communities of Chawai Chiefdom recently came under severe attacks by gunmen that killed scores of people and injured many others.

The attackers also burnt several houses, motorcycles, and crops like millet, rice, yam, and sorghum.

Some of the victims are being sheltered in primary schools while others are in places of worship or houses of friends and relations.

Worried by the situation, the Chawai Development Association, the umbrella body of Chawai people, announced on Tuesday in Kaduna that it had set up the committee to solicit donations of essential commodities and funds to assist the affected communities.

Rev Reuben Turbi, National President of the association, who signed the statement that convened the announcement, named Mr. Bala Usman as Chairman of the committee while Mr. Friday Ango is to serve as Secretary.

Among other things, the committee is expected to solicit donations of essential commodities and funds.

It listed the essential commodities to include food items, building materials, clothes, and funds from individuals, groups, and organizations.

“Whatever is gathered will be distributed as support to the victims who are undergoing various forms of hardships as a result of the attack,” the statement said.

It added that the committee would also develop a template to properly identify and document people in distress and in dire need of assistance.

“It will also work out modalities for fair and equitable distributions of donated relief materials and funds to victims, and liaise with chairmen of CDA branches to coordinate donations at the branches level.”

It also directed the committee to co-opt into it, any person whose participation may support the success of the assignment

The committee is expected to complete its assignment within one month and submit a comprehensive report to the CDA national body.

Members of the committee include Mr. Stephen Parom, Dr. Billy La’ah, Mukhtar Chawai, Simon Arabo, Raymond Paul, Token Sheyin, and Augustine Bayeh.

Others are Mrs. Keziah Garba, Mrs. Jummai Abel, Nuhu Chingali, and Tanko Bitrus.
