Celebrated Indian actor, Soumitra Chatterjee, dies at 85
Indian veteran actor and star of Bengali cinema Soumitra Chatterjee died on Sunday, officials said.
Chatterjee, born in 1935, breathed his last at a hospital in Kolkata, the capital city of West Bengal, where he was undergoing treatment for nearly a month for COVID-19 and other complications.
“We declare with a heavy heart that Soumitra Chattopadhyay (Chatterjee) breathed his last at 12:15 local time at Belle Vue Clinic today (Nov. 15).
“We pay our homage to his soul,’’ reads an official statement.
Chatterjee had tested positive for COVID-19 on Oct. 6.
Media reports said he had been under medical care and was facing secondary infections due to the COVID-19 repercussions.
“In the last few days, Chatterjee’s condition had deteriorated and he was on a ventilator,’’ an official added.
Chatterjee was best known for his collaborations with Oscar-winning film director Satyajit Ray, with whom he worked in 14 films.
In October 2020, Chatterjee tested positive for Covid-19 and was admitted in Belle Vue Clinic, Kolkata.
However, he tested negative to the 2nd Covid-19 test conducted on 14th October. In the meantime, his complications (urinary tract infection, fluctuations in sodium-potassium levels, etc.) made the condition critical and he had to be admitted to ITU. But from 13th October, his health condition started to improve marginally and on 14th October, he got transferred from Covid unit to non-covid unit.
He was kept in BiPap support and invasive ventilation for his treatment in critical times. But, after his improvement in health, the treatment mechanisms got changed. He was under the supervision of a medical team of 16 doctors.
