Dr. Olayemi Cardoso has officially taken up the role of Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, as confirmed in a statement by the CBN’s Director of Corporate Communication, Dr. Isa Abdulmumin.
Dr. Cardoso assumes the position in an acting capacity pending his confirmation by the National Assembly. This comes following the resignation of Mr. Godwin Emefiele as CBN Governor.
The statement also revealed that Mr. Folashodun Shonubi, who had been serving as acting CBN Governor since Mr. Emefiele’s suspension, has also resigned, along with all the Deputy Governors of the CBN.
Dr. Cardoso was nominated by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the position. The Director of Corporate Communications at the CBN, Dr. Isa AbdulMumin, stated that Dr. Cardoso and the deputy governor-designates have officially assumed their roles following the resignations of their predecessors.
He further explained, “Dr. Olayemi Michael Cardoso, recently nominated by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has on Friday, September 22, 2023, formally assumed duty, in an acting capacity, as the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, pending his confirmation by the Senate. This follows the resignation of Mr. Godwin Emefiele as Governor of the CBN.”
The deputy-governors-designate, including Emem Usoro, Muhammad Abdullahi-Dattijo, Philip Ikeazor, and Bala Bello, have also taken up their duties in acting capacities.
The statement noted that the new CBN leadership has already started working on monetary and financial sector policies for the Federal Government.
The Senate is expected to screen the Governor and other CBN executives once they receive an Executive Communication to that effect following their annual recess.
Additionally, the CBN has postponed the 293rd meeting of the Monetary Policy Committee, which was originally scheduled for September 25 and 26, 2023.
