Anglophone separatists attacked western Cameroon, resulting in the death of at least 20 people, including men, women, and children, as well as injuring another 10 individuals.

A local government official Viang Mekala gave details of the attack to the press on Monday.

He stated that the attack occurred in the village of Egbekaw, a neighborhood in the town of Mamfe.

“The situation is under control, and the population should not panic,” assured Mekala.

Security forces are currently conducting operations in the area to restore order.

While a senior regional administrative official reported 20 dead and 10 seriously injured individuals, another official mentioned 23 casualties and 15 houses destroyed. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack.

The ongoing conflict in Cameroon’s primarily English-speaking Northwest and Southwest regions began after separatists declared independence in 2017 due to grievances related to discrimination by the francophone majority.

President Paul Biya has maintained a firm stance against calls for greater autonomy, resulting in a crackdown.

The conflict has caused over 6,000 fatalities and displaced more than a million people.

Both separatist groups and government forces have faced accusations of committing atrocities throughout the conflict.

Human rights abuses, including killings, torture, and rape, have been reported by Amnesty International in the Northwest region, involving security forces, separatist rebels, and ethnic militiamen.
