The Confederation of African Football has said that it has initiated an investigation into the circumstances that left Nigeria’s national football team, the Super Eagles, stranded for several hours at a Libyan airport.

CAF in a statement on Monday stated that that they had been in communication with both the Libyan and Nigerian authorities after learning about the team’s ordeal.

The Super Eagles and their technical team were stranded in “disturbing conditions” at the airport, where they had allegedly been directed to land by Libyan authorities.

The football body expressed concern over the incident and confirmed that the matter had been referred to its Disciplinary Board.

An official investigation will be conducted to determine if any party violated CAF’s statutes and regulations.

“Appropriate action will be taken against those who are found to have contravened CAF’s guidelines,” the statement read.

This incident has raised concerns over the safety and logistical arrangements for teams traveling for international matches, especially as Nigeria was preparing for an important fixture.

CAF has assured that the matter will be handled swiftly and with due diligence.

Further details on the investigation and potential sanctions are expected to follow once the Disciplinary Board concludes its review.
