The Centre for Anti-Corruption and Open Leadership has expressed strong disapproval following the admission by the former Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Uche Nnaji, that he was never issued a degree certificate by the University of Nigeria, Nsukka.

In a statement released by CACOL’s Director of Administration and Programmes, Tola Oresanwo, on behalf of the organisation’s Chairman, Mr. Debo Adeniran, the group described the revelation as a national disgrace and a serious blow to the integrity of the Tinubu administration.

“This brazen confession, coming from a sitting minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, is not only a national embarrassment, but also a serious indictment on the credibility of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, which has pledged to uphold integrity and transparency in public service,” the statement read.

CACOL criticized the fact that someone could attain such a critical government position based on false academic credentials, calling it a damaging affront to national values such as merit, honesty, and accountability.

“It sends a dangerous message to Nigerian youths that deceit and forgery are acceptable routes to power – an impression that must never be tolerated in a country struggling to rebuild public trust in governance,” the organisation warned.

The anti-corruption group called for the immediate legal prosecution of the former minister, emphasizing that accountability must apply to everyone. “CACOL, therefore, demands full prosecution under the laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. No individual, regardless of political affiliation or office, should be above the law. The fight against corruption and fraud must begin from within the corridors of power,” the group stated.

The organisation also urged President Tinubu to uphold his administration’s commitment to integrity by allowing the legal process to take its course without interference. “We further urge President Tinubu to demonstrate his administration’s commitment to credibility and good governance by ensuring that the minister faces the full weight of justice,” CACOL stated.

“Anything short of this will confirm the growing suspicion that Nigeria’s leadership structure condones deceit, mediocrity and illegality. Integrity in leadership is not negotiable,” the group added.

CACOL reaffirmed its dedication to holding public officials accountable, vowing to continue its advocacy until Nigeria achieves transparency and justice in governance. “CACOL will continue to demand accountability from all public officers, irrespective of status or position, until Nigeria attains a truly transparent and just society,” the statement concluded.
