Burnley has secured its first signing of the January transfer window by bringing in Fofana as they strive to avoid relegation from the Premier League.
The 21-year-old striker, who spent the first half of the season on loan at Bundesliga side Union Berlin, witnessed Burnley’s 1-1 draw against Luton from the stands at Turf Moor on Friday.
During his loan stint at Union Berlin, Fofana showcased his abilities by scoring two goals in 17 games.
Prior to that, he caught the attention of Chelsea after netting an impressive 24 goals in 65 appearances for Norwegian side Molde. Despite his promising track record, Fofana has yet to make a significant impact at Stamford Bridge.
Burnley’s decision to sign Fofana stems from the need to bolster their attack, which has struggled to find the back of the net, managing only 21 goals this season. This goal tally ranks them second-lowest in the Premier League, ahead of only Sheffield United.
Vincent Kompany, Burnley’s manager, expressed a pragmatic outlook on the signing, stating, “I would love to be able to only present players with proven numbers, but it’s not the market we’re in at all.”
While acknowledging Fofana’s speed, ability to link up play, and talent, Kompany tempered expectations regarding his goal-scoring prowess. He emphasized the need to strengthen the overall attacking unit.
