Buildings destroyed, as flood hits Taraba community

Published

The Mayo Selbe community in the Gashaka Local Government Area of Taraba State has been devastated by a destructive flood following heavy rainfall on Friday night.

According to Channels TV, the natural disaster, a first for the area, has caused substantial damage, including the destruction of farmlands, domestic animals, residential buildings, and even a bridge.

Eyewitnesses from the community expressed their distress and called for immediate evacuation to higher ground to prevent further harm.

They also pleaded with relevant authorities to provide assistance to the affected residents.

The traditional ruler of the community, Thomas Maiyanga, a third-class chief, is urgently seeking support from both the state and Federal Governments to help rebuild not only the homes but also the lives of his people.

He emphasized that many residents had lost nearly everything in the flood, leaving them in dire circumstances.

The recent release of water from the Cameroon Lagdo Dam, as disclosed by the Director General of the National Emergency Management Agency, Mustapha Habib, is expected to result in additional flooding downstream in Nigeria.

Taraba State is among the states listed to be affected, along with Benue, Nasarawa, Kogi, Anambra, Edo, Delta, Bayelsa, and Adamawa.
