A building collapsed in the Egyptian capital, Cairo, on Monday, killing 10 people and injuring eight others.
Several more people are believed to be trapped under the rubble, according to reports from state media.
The incident took place in the working-class neighbourhood of Kerdasa. Ambulances were quickly sent to the scene, and civil defence teams worked tirelessly to search for those missing under the collapsed building.
Eyewitnesses told Al-Akhbar Al-Youm newspaper that the collapse was triggered by “a gas cylinder explosion,” and police have started an investigation into the cause.
Building regulations in Cairo are often not strictly enforced, and the city, home to more than 26 million people, has witnessed several deadly building collapses in recent years.
These incidents are sometimes due to the poor condition of older buildings and, at other times, because of failure to follow safety standards.
