Buhari, others mourn ex-finance minister Soleye

Former President Muhammadu Buhari mourns the death of Ex-Minister of Finance, Dr Onaolapo Soleye, who passed away on Wednesday at the age of 90, just four days after celebrating his 90th birthday in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

Soleye died in the early hours of Wednesday at a specialist hospital in Ibara GRA.

The Soleye family announced the demise in a statement, expressing gratitude for his impactful and eventful life.

The statement read, “With heavy hearts but with gratitude to God Almighty for a long, impactful and positively eventful life, the family announces the passing of Pa Dr Onaolapo Soleye. He turned ninety years old only last Saturday.”

Dr Soleye’s notable roles included serving as an Associate Professor at the University of Ibadan, Commissioner for Works in Ogun State, and Minister of Finance of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Modupe Womiloju Soleye, four children, grandchildren, and a great-grandchild.

Buhari expressed condolences, describing Dr. Soleye as a rare gentleman and an expert in financial matters.

In a statement, Buhari said, “He diligently served Nigeria. His wit, intellect, diligence, and warm personality were legendary. May the Almighty give those he left behind the fortitude to bear the loss.”

Senator Gbenga Daniel, representing Ogun East and former governor, also paid tribute to Dr. Soleye, describing him as a remarkable man whose dedication to acts of kindness and good deeds had a significant impact on many people.
