Governor El-Rufai turns 60, President Buhari reacts

Governor Nasir El-rufai of Kaduna State has said that the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), never used federal might to steal elections.

El-rufai said this during an interview on Channels Television on September, 21, 2020, in reaction to the Edo State governorship election.

He was quoted by a presidential aide, Tolu Ogunlesi, who shared on twitter: “President @MBuhari has never used the ‘Federal might’ that other governments have used to steal elections in the past. He has always said, let the people’s votes count, and we can live with that.”

On how tasking the job of a governor is, El-rufai said that governors have one of the most difficult job in the world.

He also said that everyone thinks governors are thieves who are wasting state resources.

He said, “Governors are the most suspected elected officials. Everyone thinks Governors are just thieves and we are wasting state resources, we are not doing anything. Governors are assumed to be taking security votes. When people hear security votes, they think it is a slush fund for Governors. So we have a very negative image out there.

“Meanwhile, we have one of the most difficult jobs in the world. And we are subnational; our capacity to borrow is limited. The Federal Government can print money. We cannot.

“Other than Lagos, very few state governments have room to do what they can do because apart from Lagos virtually every state in Nigeria relies on Federation Account transfers. And when they go down, you are in trouble.”
