Former President Muhammadu Buhari has expressed deep sadness over the recent stampedes that claimed numerous lives in Oyo State, Anambra State, and the Federal Capital Territory.
In a statement on Sunday signed by his media spokesman, Garba Shehu, Buhari extended his condolences to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and sympathized with the affected communities.
Buhari conveyed his sympathies to Governors Seyi Makinde of Oyo State and Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra State, as well as the Minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike.
“I send my heartfelt condolences to the families and loved ones of the victims,” Buhari stated, adding that he wished a swift recovery to those injured in the incidents.
He also expressed solidarity with the Catholic community, which was affected by the stampede in Abuja, saying, “I stand with you during this difficult time.”
Abuja: The FCT Police Command reported that 10 people, including four children, lost their lives during a food distribution event at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Maitama on Saturday.
Oyo State: A children’s funfair at the Islamic High School in Basorun, Ibadan, held on Wednesday, resulted in a stampede that left 35 people dead and many others injured.
Anambra State: On Saturday, a stampede occurred at the Obijackson Centre in Okija, Ihiala Local Government Area, leaving many feared dead and several others injured.
Buhari used the occasion to extend his Christmas and New Year greetings to Nigerians, urging them to reflect on the teachings of Jesus Christ.
“As we celebrate the birth of Christ, let us embrace compassion, unity, and peace. These are the values that will guide us towards a better nation,” Buhari said.
He added, “May the New Year, 2025, bring us prosperity, peace, and good health.”
