The President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd) has expressed sadness on the passing of retired Brig.-Gen. Dominic Oneya, saying Nigeria will never forget his excellent leadership as a military commander and sports administrator.

WuzupNigeria reported that Oneya died at the age of 73 on Thursday morning in his home at Effurun GRA in Uvwie Local Government Area of Delta State.

Born on May 26, 1948, Oneya, who hailed from Agbarho Kingdom in Ughelli, was in charge of the NFF (which was formerly known as Nigeria Football Association until 2008) from 1999 to 2002.

However, Buhari’s condolence message was contained in a statement by Malam Garba Shehu, the President’s Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, on Friday in Abuja.

The president said “Nigeria mourns at the unfortunate demise of General Oneya, former Military Governor of Benue and Kano States.

“We remember his outstanding services to the nation through his career in the army and his one-time presidency of the Nigerian Football Federation, NFF. May the Almighty repose his soul.”
