Manchester United made another costly Premier League slip-up today as the Red Devils fell to a 2-0 defeat against Watford at Vicarage Road.
Beating the big teams has not been a problem for United this season, with victories over Chelsea, Tottenham, Man City, Leicester, and a draw against Liverpool – but Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side have struggled badly against the other end of the table.
Jesse Lingard wasted the best chance of the first half for United as he lobbed the ball over the bar – and David de Gea’s awful error allowed Ismaila Sarr to score soon after the restart, before Troy Deeney scored from the penalty spot to make it 2-0.
Paul Pogba returned off the bench as United tried to find a way back into the game, but the Red Devils turned in possibly their worst performance of the season as Watford ran out comfortable winners.
“It’s massive. We’ve been close for ages at the bottom of the league but the performances of the boy last week, we deserved it. We can’t get carried away but I’m just happy people can have a better Christmas,” Watford captain Troy Deeney told Sky Sports.
On Nigel Pearson effect
“He’s been instrumental in getting people to work hard and enjoy football again, the players are putting their bodies on the line. We just need to keep working hard.”
