After months of speculation and controversy, Edo State Deputy Governor, Philip Shaibu, has formally announced his candidacy for the 2024 governorship election. Shaibu, who has served as deputy governor since 2016, made his declaration in a pre-recorded speech aired on Monday.
Shaibu, a member of the Peoples Democratic Party, launched his campaign office in Benin City, the state capital, amidst a crowd of party supporters.
He stated that his decision to run was based on the encouragement of his constituents and his unwavering commitment to the development of Edo State.
“After all the consultation we have made, we needed to now make the answer to our consultation known to our people. And the answer is clear: they have asked me to run,” Shaibu said.
Shaibu acknowledged the political challenges he has faced, including his strained relationship with Governor Godwin Obaseki.
He expressed resilience in the face of these challenges and vowed to continue working towards the betterment of Edo State.
Recall that Wuzup Nigeria reported that Shaibu has previously said he will declare his intention to run for the governorship election today.
