Brazilian defender Danilo has left Juventus after the mutual termination of his contract, the Serie A club confirmed on Monday.

“Danilo Luiz da Silva and Juventus have parted ways after five and a half years together, following a mutual termination of the player’s contract,” Juventus said in an official statement.

Danilo, 33, leaves with an impressive record at Juventus, having won one Serie A title, two Italian Cups, and one Italian Super Cup during his 213 appearances for the Turin giants.

Reports in the Italian media suggest that Danilo is set to return to Brazil, where he will reportedly join Flamengo on a two-year deal. His contract with Juventus was initially set to expire at the end of the current season.

In an emotional farewell post on Instagram, Danilo wrote, “I knew this day would come sooner or later, but you’re never ready to say goodbye.”

The decision follows changes at Juventus after the arrival of coach Thiago Motta in the summer. Danilo fell out of favour under Motta’s management and was replaced as captain by Italy midfielder Manuel Locatelli.

In other developments, Portuguese defender Renato Veiga has arrived in Turin for his medical ahead of a loan move from Chelsea. Meanwhile, Brazil defender Gleison Bremer, Danilo’s compatriot, has been ruled out for the season due to a knee injury.

Juventus currently sit fifth in Serie A, just two points shy of a Champions League qualification spot. They are preparing for a crucial match against Benfica in the Champions League on Wednesday.
