Legendary pugilist, ‘Marvelous’ Marvin Hagler has passed away on Saturday, the family announced.
He died at age 66.
Dubbed one of the “Four Kings’ of boxing in his time, Hagler was a former undisputed middleweight champion.
Hagler’s title reign and career in the ring ended with a split-decision loss to “Sugar” Ray Leonard in 1987.
His wife, Kay announced on social media that the beloved boxer died unexpectedly on their home in New Hampshire
Hagler’s wife, Kay, confirmed the news with a post on her late husband’s Facebook fan page although no official cause of death was given.
“I am sorry to make a very sad announcement. Today unfortunately my beloved husband Marvelous Marvin passed away unexpectedly at his home here in New Hampshire. Our family requests that you respect our privacy during this difficult time. With love, Kay G. Hagler.” she wrote on his Facebook fan page.
Promoter Bob Arum also confirmed the death of Hagler who ” was among the greatest athletes that Top Rank ever promoted” via a press release.
“He was a man of honor and a man of his word, and he performed in the ring with unparalleled determination,” Arum said, adding that Hagler was “a true athlete and a true man. I will miss him greatly.”
With a fight card of 62-3-2 including 52 knockouts from 1973 to 1987, Hagler remained the undisputed middleweight champion from 1980 until his loss to Leonard at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas on April 6, 1987.
