Governor Babagana Umara Zulum of Borno State on Tuesday ordered the demolition of illegal brothels in Maiduguri within 72 hours and revoked land titles initially granted to the Nigerian Railway Corporation.
The impacted area, ‘Bayan Quarters,’ situated around railway staff quarters in Maiduguri, has been a hotspot for criminal activities, particularly prostitution, gangsterism, drug peddling, and the exploitation of minors.
Expressing his deep concern over the increasing criminal activities tied to these unlawful brothels and criminal dens, Governor Zulum underscored their negative impact on community well-being and the dignity of the individuals involved.
Zulum stated, “The government has been duly informed of the activities that are going on here, this settlement is completely illegal. People are killed here; this place serves as a breeding space for insurgents. Therefore, I have directed that everybody should vacate the place.”
“I understand that this land was approved by Borno State Government to be used by the Nigerian Railway Corporation, but unfortunately, it’s been rented out illegally with all forms of criminal activities taking place.”
