The Nigerian Army has confirmed that the explosion at a mosque in Gamboru Market, Maiduguri, Borno State, was caused by a suicide bomber.
The incident occurred at about 6:00 pm on Tuesday, December 24, 2025, within the Maiduguri Metropolitan Council area.
The Headquarters of Operation Hadin Kai disclosed this in a statement issued by the Theatre Command spokesperson, Lt. Col. Sani Uba.
According to him, preliminary investigations showed that the blast was carried out by a suspected Boko Haram terrorist.
“Preliminary findings indicated the incident was caused by a suspected Boko Haram Terrorist suicide bomber, who detonated an improvised explosive device, killing himself and two civilians on the scene,” Uba said.
He explained that troops, alongside the Nigeria Police Explosive Ordnance Disposal team, other security agencies, the Borno State Government and officials of the National Emergency Management Agency, swiftly responded to the scene.
“The troops, in conjunction with the Nigeria Police EOD team, other sister security agencies, Borno State Government, and NEMA, responded promptly, secured, and cordoned off the affected area to prevent further harm and ensure public safety,” the statement read.
Uba said the injured victims were immediately evacuated to the General Hospital and the Teaching Hospital in Maiduguri for medical treatment.
He revealed that 32 civilians sustained varying degrees of injuries during the attack.
“Two of the injured civilians were later confirmed dead at the hospital, while two others are currently in critical condition,” he said.
He added that the remaining victims were stable and receiving medical care.
While assuring residents of safety during the festive period, the army said security has been tightened across Maiduguri and its environs.
Uba noted that troops and other security agencies have intensified surveillance and security measures to prevent further attacks.
