The Borno State Urban Planning and Development Board has announced a ban on street hawking and other illegal activities within Maiduguri metropolis.

The General Manager of the board, Mr. Limán Mustapha, made this known in a statement on Friday, saying the ban aligns with the Borno State Urban Planning and Development Law of 2002.

The ban affects street hawking, tricycle operations, and generator mechanics in areas around Maiduguri’s Post Office and Monday Market. Other prohibited activities include the use of pedestrian walkways, junctions, and roundabouts for business purposes, selling engine oil on road reservations, dumping sand or building materials on roads, mixing cement on streets, and constructing boreholes by the roadside.

Mr. Mustapha emphasized that those affected by the directive must vacate the sites immediately, warning of legal consequences for defaulters.

“The board has no alternative but to arrest and prosecute defaulters in a court of law,” he said. “This measure is to ensure a clean, safe, and organized urban environment in Maiduguri and other parts of the state.”

The General Manager urged residents and business owners to cooperate with the new directive to avoid facing legal actions.

The decision is aimed at improving urban planning and ensuring a more organized city environment as Maiduguri continues to recover and rebuild.

Residents are encouraged to support this effort to maintain cleanliness and order in the city.
