Norwegian champions Bodo/Glimt pulled off a stunning Champions League upset on Tuesday night, beating Manchester City 3-1 in freezing conditions at the Aspmyra Stadion.

Pep Guardiola’s side were undone by a ruthless Bodo/Glimt display, with Kasper Hogh scoring twice in the first half before Jens Petter Hauge added a third after the break.

City briefly threatened a comeback when Rayan Cherki pulled one back moments after Hauge’s goal, but any hopes of recovery faded when Rodri was sent off for two quick bookings, leaving the Premier League champions in trouble.

Playing in temperatures of minus two degrees, City looked flat and disjointed against opponents whose entire town population could fit inside the Etihad Stadium.

Bodo/Glimt took the lead in the 22nd minute after a defensive error, with Ole Didrik Blomberg crossing for Hogh to head past goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma. Just two minutes later, another lapse allowed Hogh to strike again, punishing City’s shaky backline.

City struggled to respond, with Erling Haaland missing chances before the break as his poor run of form continued.

The hosts sealed a famous night in the 58th minute when Hauge curled a fine long-range effort into the top corner after City lost possession in midfield.

Cherki reduced the deficit two minutes later, but Rodri’s dismissal in the 62nd minute ended City’s resistance as Bodo/Glimt celebrated their first-ever Champions League group stage win.

The result compounds a difficult period for Guardiola’s side, who are winless in their last four Premier League matches and recently lost the Manchester derby.

City will now look to recover when they host Galatasaray on January 28 in their final group phase match, as they chase a top-eight finish and automatic qualification for the last 16.
