Gaza is on the brink of a humanitarian catastrophe as the enclave’s only power plant is set to run out of fuel within hours due to Israel’s cutoff of supplies.
The Gaza power authority has warned that electricity will be completely depleted shortly, as Israel’s blockade has closed all of Gaza’s crossings, preventing the import of fuel for the power plant and generators.
The Israeli decision to cut off electricity to Gaza came in response to a violent attack by Hamas militants over the weekend.
Airstrikes have left parts of Gaza in ruins, with the number of casualties unclear.
The situation worsened as Hamas militants captured an estimated 150 people, including soldiers, civilians, and children, during their incursion into Israel.
Humanitarian groups are urgently calling for the creation of aid corridors to provide much-needed supplies to Gaza.
Hospitals in the region are overwhelmed with the wounded, and essential resources such as food, fuel, and medicine are running critically low.
The conflict, which has already claimed over 2,100 lives on both sides, is expected to intensify further.
The World Health Organization reported that supplies pre-positioned for Gaza’s hospitals have already been exhausted, while Doctors Without Borders stated that surgical equipment, antibiotics, fuel, and other vital resources are running out in the hospitals they operate in the region.
The Gaza Strip’s power plant, the only source of electricity, is now left with a dwindling fuel supply.
Israel has declared a “total siege,” exacerbating the dire humanitarian situation in the area.
