BIZARRE! Woman recounts how she saw Nigerian pound in church’s offering box
A Nigerian lady has reported that she recently discovered Nigerian’s old currency, in a church’s offering box.
She shared the photos of the naira notes on her Twitter page, @reetah_kay, and said it happened after Sunday service.
The Twitter user did not disclose the name of the church in question and the location.
However, she asked a question to fellow Twitter users on how the money that has been out of circulation was preserved for 45 years.
She wrote,
“After Sunday service, those counting d money did dere work and guess what they found? “Nigeria’s own One Pound” I mean “one pound” used btw d year 1907 and 1973…
“Now my question is, how did dis person manage to keep dis currency till date?”
The Nigerian pound was the currency of Nigeria between 1907 and 1973. Until 1958, Nigeria used the British West African pound, after which it issued its own currency.
The Nigerian pound (which was at parity with the British pound with easy convertibility was replaced with the introduction in 1973 of the decimal naira at a rate of 1 pound = 2 naira.
