Bishop charged with sexual assault in Kenya

An Anglican Church Bishop, Joel Waweru, has been charged with sexually assaulting a woman by touching her breasts and attempting to kiss her without her consent.

Waweru committed the offence at different times in Lang’ata, Nairobi county, according to the charge sheet.

The Bishop is said to have used his position of authority in the church to abuse the suspect since 2018.

Waweru was said to have subject his victim to harassment and humiliation.

kenyareport reports that the woman was unseated from being the parish vicar, transferred to different church and her salary deducted.

Police further told the court that there was a time when the priest summoned his victim before the elders of the church and lied about her referring to him as an uncircumcised man.

The police said that the move left the woman embarrassed and emotionally frustrated and feeling insecure.

The bishop also on various occasions embarrassed his victim, asking her to tell the congregation that he never asked her for sex.

The woman told the court of one of the days in her office when the Bishop pretended he was removing some stains in her blouse and ended up indecently touching her breasts.

She said she felt uncomfortable and uneasy about the act.

Waweru is also said to have confessed his love for the woman.

However, the Bishop has denied the charges and was released on Ksh50,000 bail.

The matter is set to be mentioned in the next two weeks.
