American singer popularly referred to as “Songbird Supreme” by the Guinness World Records, Mariah Carey, has revealed that she is no longer living in denial and isolation after being treated for bipolar disorder.
Carey one of the most successful singers of all time, with 18 No. 1 hits and more than 200 million records sold, said she suffered in silence because of constant fear that she would be exposed.
In a new People magazine cover story, Carey talks about having been diagnosed with bipolar disorder and where she is today.
She said it was hard for her to believe when she was diagnosed in 2001 (she was hospitalized for a physical and mental breakdown.)
Carey says she finally sought treatment recently after “the hardest couple of years I’ve been through.”
Bipolar disorder, formerly called manic depression, is a mental health condition that causes extreme mood swings that include emotional highs (mania or hypomania) and lows (depression).
Some of the symptoms of bipolar disorder include depression, insomnia, sudden mood swings, irritability, and hyperactivity.
Carey says she is now in therapy and getting treatment for the disorder.
“Until recently I lived in denial and isolation and in constant fear someone would expose me.
“It was too heavy a burden to carry and I simply couldn’t do that anymore. I sought and received treatment, I put positive people around me and I got back to doing what I love – writing songs and making music.
“I’m actually taking medication that seems to be pretty good. It’s not making me feel too tired or sluggish or anything like that. Finding the proper balance is what is most important,” she told the magazine…”
In 2014, Carey separated from ex-husband and rapper, Nick Cannon. Their marriage produced twins, Moroccan and Monroe.
In January 2016, she announced her engagement to Joseph Parker but nine months later, they broke up.
Carey is currently working on her 15th studio album.
