US President Joe Biden will award the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian honor in the United States, to 19 distinguished individuals on Saturday.

The honorees include entertainers, sports legends, political figures, and diplomats who have made significant contributions to their fields and society.

Among the recipients are soccer superstar Lionel Messi, actor Denzel Washington, basketball legend Earvin “Magic” Johnson, singer and activist Bono, actor Michael J. Fox, and fashion designer Ralph Lauren.

“These individuals are great leaders because they are good people who have made extraordinary contributions to their country and the world,” the White House stated.

Other awardees include:

  • Anna Wintour, the longtime fashion editor,
  • Jane Goodall, a renowned primate researcher and environmentalist,
  • Jose Andres, a chef and founder of the World Central Kitchen NGO.

Some honorees have a strong political profile:

  • George Soros, a billionaire philanthropist, was recognized for supporting organizations that promote democracy, human rights, and social justice.
  • Hillary Clinton, the former first lady and secretary of state, was celebrated for her decades of public service and as the first woman nominated by a major party for a US presidential election.

Biden will also posthumously honor Robert Francis Kennedy, popularly known as “Bobby” Kennedy or “RFK.” RFK, who was assassinated in 1968 while campaigning for the Democratic presidential nomination, served as US Attorney General during his brother John F. Kennedy’s presidency.

“His legacy continues to inspire those committed to justice, equality, and public service,” Biden noted.

The awards reflect Biden’s effort to leave a lasting mark as his presidency nears its end. On Thursday, Biden also awarded the Presidential Citizens Medal to Liz Cheney, a former Republican congresswoman who played a key role in the investigation of the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot.

Former President Donald Trump criticized the recognition of Cheney, calling her “totally corrupt” and accusing Biden of rewarding her for her opposition to him.
