America’s Presiden-elect, Joe Biden and his running mate, Kamala Harris have been named Time Magazine’s 2020 Person of the Year.
Biden and Harris, the first black female Vice President in the White House will be inaugurated on January 20, 2021, after winning the Nov 3 presidential elections to oust incumbent Donald Trump.
“Person of the Year is not just about the year that was, but about where we’re headed, and the next four years are going to be an enormous test of them and all of us to see whether they can bring about a unity,” TIME editor-in-chief Edward Felsenthal said during the announcement.
“In @JoeBiden and @KamalaHarris, we have two people whose election mirrored and moved the major stories of this year and whose fates will shape the nation’s role in the world and the future of the American experiment,” he added on his verified Twitter account.
Incumbent President Donald Trump had the honour in 2016, while Barack Obama was named Person of the Year in 2012, just like every elected US president during their term.
However, vice president-elect Harris has been added this year due to the nature of their victory.
Others to get Time’s honours in 2020 include BTS (Entertainer of the Year) and LeBron James (Athlete of the Year), Assa Traore and racial justice organiser (Guardians of the Year), Zoom founder Eric Yaun was recognised as Business Person of the Year, and Dr. Anthony Fauci was named Guardian of the Year.
