Biden approves $100m aid for Gaza
US President Joe Biden declared that Israel had agreed to permit humanitarian aid to flow into Gaza from Egypt during his visit to Isreal on Wednesday. He also announced an additional $100 million in humanitarian assistance for Gaza and the West Bank
He emphasized the need for humanitarian assistance to reach the innocent Palestinian civilians caught in the midst of the conflict.
Israel had previously severed the flow of critical supplies such as food, fuel, and water to Gaza after the attack, exacerbating the dire situation for civilians, aid organizations, and hospitals. An explosion at a Gaza hospital on Tuesday only worsened the crisis.
“I understand. Many Americans understand,” Biden said, likening the attack to the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks in the U.S. that killed nearly 3,000 people. “You can’t look at what has happened here … and not scream out for justice. While you feel that rage, don’t be consumed by it.”
Shortly after President Biden’s remarks, Israel confirmed that food, water, and medicine would begin flowing into Gaza, although the timing remained uncertain.
Regarding the conflicting claims about the hospital explosion, President Biden, relying on data from the U.S. Defense Department, stated: “Based on what I’ve seen, it appears as though it was done by the other team, not you.”
President Biden was originally scheduled to visit Jordan to meet with Arab leaders, but the summit was canceled due to the hospital explosion.
During his visit, President Biden expressed his deep sadness and outrage at the hospital explosion, underlining that Hamas does not represent all Palestinian people and has brought suffering to many.
He pledged unwavering support for Israel and urged collaboration with regional partners to prevent further tragedy to innocent civilians: “I want you to know you’re not alone. We will continue to have Israel’s back as you work to defend your people.”
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu expressed his gratitude for President Biden’s support and emphasized the need for the civilized world to unite against Hamas: “The civilized world must unite to defeat Hamas.”
