Betta Edu: No one too big for investigation, says EFCC boss

Published

The Executive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Ola Olukoyede, has emphasized that no individual is exempt from investigation, asserting that nobody is too prominent to be scrutinized for alleged corrupt practices.

The cautionary statement was issued in Abuja during a courtesy visit by Musa Adamu Aliyu, the Chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission.

This occurred amid the ongoing investigation into Betta Edu, the suspended Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, following a leaked memo revealing financial irregularities.

The memo exposed how Edu directed the Accountant General of the Federation to transfer N585 million designated for vulnerable individuals into a private account belonging to Oniyelu Bridget Mojisola. Responding to public outcry, President Bola Tinubu suspended Edu and mandated the EFCC to investigate the alleged financial misappropriation comprehensively.

The EFCC Chairman underscored the commitment to combating corruption within Tinubu’s administration. In a statement by the EFCC’s spokesman, Dele Oyewale, Olukoyede stated, “Tinubu is offering the right atmosphere for anti-graft activities, both for the EFCC and ICPC, and no Nigerian is immune to investigation for any corruption allegation.”

Acknowledging the leadership provided by President Tinubu, Olukoyede stressed the imperative of thorough investigations, asserting, “Nobody is too big to be investigated in this country. Once you are not playing according to the rules, we will investigate you.”
