The Benue State Government has announced plans to rename the State University, Makurdi, in honor of former Governor Rev. Fr. Moses Adasu, who founded the institution during his tenure from 1991 to 1992.
Governor Hyacinth Alia made the announcement on Saturday during the university’s combined convocation held on the campus. He revealed that an executive bill has already been sent to the State House of Assembly to rename the school as Reverend Father Moses Adasu University.
“As a way of honoring the founder of this institution, our administration has sent an executive bill to the state assembly for this university to be named after the founder, Rev. Fr. Moses Adasu,” Alia stated.
The governor also revealed plans to establish a satellite campus in Adikpo, Kwande Local Government Area, to ensure greater access to education for people in the Benue North East senatorial district. He directed the university’s management to collaborate with the state government to make this a reality.
To support academic excellence, Governor Alia announced a donation of 500 computers to the university’s computer-based test center. He also pledged a full Master’s Degree scholarship for all students who graduated with first-class degrees, urging them to be ambassadors of integrity, hard work, and societal impact.
Alia commended the institution’s Center for Food Technology and Research (CEFTER) for its initiatives and promised to strengthen partnerships with the World Bank to address post-harvest losses. He also vowed to revamp the Wannune Tomato Company and Taraku Mills to boost the state’s economy and create job opportunities for youths.
Addressing the graduating students, Alia encouraged them to embrace the state’s agricultural policies and venture into farming. He assured them of government support through funds and free farm inputs to help them establish a sustainable livelihood, rather than relying on unavailable white-collar jobs.
