The Benue State House of Assembly has elected Alfred Emberga as its new Speaker, following the sudden resignation of Aondona Dajoh.

Emberga, who was among four lawmakers suspended last Friday for attempting to unseat Dajoh, was sworn in on Sunday during an emergency plenary session at the Assembly complex in Makurdi.

The session was presided over by Deputy Speaker Lami Danaldi-Ogenyi. During the sitting, Majority Leader Saater Tiseer moved a motion to lift the suspension of the four lawmakers, a move that was seconded by Samuel Jiji of the Logo constituency.

“Following the motion raised by the majority leader and supported by members of the house, this house has resolved to lift the suspension of the four members,” Danaldi-Ogenyi said.

After the suspended lawmakers returned to the chamber, Douglas Akyaa, representing Makurdi South constituency, nominated Emberga for the Speaker’s position. The motion was seconded by Abu Umoru of the Apa constituency, with no other nominations made.

The oath of office was administered by the Clerk of the House, John Hwande.

In his acceptance speech, Emberga praised his predecessor for his service and pledged to lead with fairness and inclusivity.

“To my esteemed colleagues, I assure you that this leadership will be anchored on inclusiveness, fairness and respect for diverse opinions,” he said.

“This house under my watch will work harmoniously with the executive and judiciary while maintaining our independence in line with the principle of separation of powers.”
