In the face of increasing crimes rates being perpetrated by housemaids in Nigeria, the Commander of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) of the Lagos State Police Command, DCP Tunji Disu has advised Nigerians to be cautious when hiring maids.
Nigeria seems to have become a haven for migrants from neighbouring African countries like Benin Republic, Togo, seeking greener pastures. They migrate into the country to take up menial jobs like housemaids, but recent developments have revealed that hiring them could come with a lot of danger and havoc.
Some of these maids wreak havoc on their employers with their criminal actions and eventually flee the country back to their original home. Some steal valuables from their employers, some connive with kidnappers to inflict pains, while others go to the extreme of poisoning or killing their employers after stealing from them.
In recent times, the media has been awashed with reports of criminal activities by some of these housemaids and how they manage to abscond without any traces from their employer’s homes.

Recall that a Lagos businessman and Chairman of Credit Switch, Chief Ope Bademosi, was stabbed to death by his Togolese cook in 2018. Also recently, a Lagos State High Court sentenced a Beninese domestic help, Christian Yavine, to death for killing his employer’s 78-year-old mother.
Also in March, a Nigerian housemaid Ngozi Edeh was sent to prison for stealing employer’s N25 million jewelries in Lagos. Most of the time the maids absconds and Police find it hard to arrest them.
To guide against being victims of such crime, Disu, a Deputy Commissioner of Police, warned Nigerians on steps to take when hiring maids
The commander took to his Twitter page to share the story of a family whose maid recently absconded with her valuables and advised employers to ensure they have addresses and pictures of the maids and ensure they present guarantors before hiring them.
He tweeted:
“Do you have the pictures, addresses, phone numbers of your maids or drivers? Who guaranteed your domestic staff?
“The maid of a sister just escaped with her employer’s jewelries and $. She doesn’t have any picture of the maid and nobody guaranteed the maid, lets learn, please”
