Olympics: Nigeria’s D’Tigers suffer second defeat, lose 99-92 to Germany
Nigeria’s men’s basketball team, D’Tigers, have lost their second group match to Germany by 99-92 points on Wednesday in Saitama, Japan.
Mike Brown’s men were hoping to bounce back from an opening match defeat to the Australian Boomers but it was the German team who got their first victory at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games after losing their opener to Italy.
Nigeria put up a good show despite ending the first quarter behind by three points (21-24) and they fought back in the second quarter to win by three points (29-26) to end the first half with a 50-50 draw.
Both teams were inseparable after the third quarter ended 24-24 to take the game to 74 points apiece but the Nigerians lost the pace in the final quarter which they lost 18-25.
Johannes Voigtmann scored 19 points, while Moritz Wagner scored 17 points, Danilo Barthel scored 14, Maodo Lo had 13 and Andreas Obst finished with 12 for Germany.
Jordan Nwora scored 33 points for Nigeria, while Miye Oni scored 15. Nigeria made 17 3-pointers.
The Germans edge Italy and Australia, sinking Nigeria to the bottom of Group B with only two points pending the other match between Australia and Italy.
The victory leaves the Germans with a chance of qualifying for next week’s knockout stage.
Both teams will finish their round-robin Group B schedules on Saturday. Nigeria faces Italy, and Germany takes on Australia.
