The president of Barcelona football club, Josep Bartomeu has resigned from the club’s board of directors on Wednesday night.

According to reports, the club’s entire board will also be stepping down from their posts as soon as possible.

Recall that Bartomeu has been under scrutiny for months since the 8-2 champions League humiliation by Bayern Munich, as well as Lionel Messi’s shock request to leave the club shortly after.

Despite succeeding in tying down the six times Ballon D’or winner for at least another season, the noose Bartomeu at his position did not loosen with the club’s members suing for a vote of no confidence in an effort to get Bartomeu out immediately, though his tenure ends next year.

Bartomeu’s resignation on Monday will be more of a relief to Barca fans than a surprise despite saying it “never crossed my mind” 24 hours earlier.

The 57-year-old became the club’s president in January 2014 when he took over from Sandro Rosel who also resigned, becoming the 40th President of Barcelona.

Barca won La Liga four times as well as the 2014-15 Champions League, but his time in charge will largely be defined by the club’s failings in his final seasons.

Having struggled to find value in the transfer market since Neymar’s departure to join Paris Saint-Germain, Barca finished the 2019-20 season trophyless. [Goal]
