Suspected bandits have reportedly claimed the lives of two farmers in the Yangtu Special Development Area of Taraba State.

The attack occurred in the early hours of Tuesday in the southern zone of the state, adding to the series of assaults on the community.

According to Habila Timothy, the immediate past member representing the Ussa Local Government Area in the State House of Assembly, the victims were farmers from Kpambo village.

They were attacked on their farmlands in Kwambai, a border town between the local government and the development area.

Timothy expressed the distress in the community, stating, “As I speak to you, my people are in total disarray and lack direction, women and children are crying, and it will soon be night. How many people will I carry in my vehicle to safe places? How sure are we that the road we will follow is also safe? We really need assistance for peace to return.”

Abdullahi Usman, the spokesman for the Taraba Police Command, confirmed the incident but mentioned that the report had not reached the desk of the divisional police officer in the Yangtu Special Development Area.

He assured that measures are being taken to address the banditry situation in the state.

This attack is part of an ongoing wave of violence in the community, leading to residents fleeing for safety and disrupting normal activities.

Farming, schools, and social activities have come to a halt in the affected area. Some residents are seeking refuge in makeshift shelters located in Yangtu Special Development Area, Ussa, and Takum local government areas.

Governor Agbu Kefas has made efforts to address the security challenges, visiting security agencies’ headquarters in Abuja in recent times to seek solutions and curb the recurring killings.
