Azikiwe, Ekwueme’s widows reassure Nigerians on safety of AstraZeneca vaccine
Prof. Uche Azikiwe, widow of former Premier of the Eastern Region and Nigeria’s first President, late Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, and Mrs. Beatrice Ekwueme, wife of late former Vice President of Nigeria, Dr. Alex Ekwueme, have encouraged Nigerians to embrace the ongoing AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccination.
They further reassured the people that the vaccine is safe and effective in the fight against the pandemic.
The two revered matriarchs issued the statements shortly after they both received the first jabs of the Oxford AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine in their residences at Enugu and Nsukka respectively.
According to reports, the Enugu and Nsukka medical team was led by the Secretary of the State Primary Health Care Development Agency, Dr. George Ugwu.
In her statement, the wife of late former President disclosed that the vaccine had no immediate effect on her 15 minutes after she received it.
Azikiwe, therefore, pleaded with Nigerians, especially ‘Ndi Igbo’ to “protect ourselves by taking this vaccine”.
The widow of Nigeria’s former vice president, on the other hand, expressed delight at taking the dose without reactions or any of the speculated side effects.
“I have just taken my vaccination. It is not as painful as I thought because I am not needle-friendly. After taking the jab I wondered if I was still expecting anything, but it is all over. It is something worth taking,” she said.
Ekwueme who said she has lost a few friends to the pandemic charged all those who are qualified to take the vaccine to “go for it”.
