Atletico Madrid defender Robin Le Normand has been diagnosed with a brain injury after a head collision during last Sunday’s La Liga derby against Real Madrid.
The 27-year-old centre-back was injured in the final minutes of the game, which ended in a 1-1 draw at Atletico’s Metropolitano stadium.
The club confirmed the news in a statement on Tuesday, saying, “Le Normand suffered a heavy blow to the head in the final minutes of the Madrid derby, for which he has undergone a series of tests and an assessment by specialists who have determined that he has suffered a traumatic brain injury with subdural haematoma.”
Atletico also announced that Le Normand’s return to football would follow strict medical protocols. “In the process of our player’s return to competition, the guidelines set out in the protocol established for this type of trauma will be followed,” the club added.
Le Normand, who recently won Euro 2024 with Spain, was not included in Atletico’s squad for their upcoming Champions League match against Benfica on Wednesday.
The French-born defender joined Atletico Madrid from Real Sociedad this summer and has quickly become a key player under coach Diego Simeone.
