Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has officially resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Atiku confirmed his resignation in a letter dated July 14, 2025, addressed to the chairman of PDP in Jada 1 Ward, Jada Local Government Area of Adamawa State. A copy of the letter was shared on X by his media aide.

“I am writing to formally resign my membership from the People’s Democratic Party with immediate effect,” Atiku wrote.

He thanked the party for the opportunities given to him, including serving two terms as Nigeria’s Vice President and contesting for president twice.

“As a founding father of this esteemed party, it is indeed heartbreaking for me to make this decision,” he stated.

Atiku explained that his resignation was due to the party’s current direction, which he said no longer aligns with the principles they once shared.

“I find it necessary to part ways due to the current trajectory the party has taken. I resign recognising the irreconcilable differences that have emerged,” the letter added.

Atiku’s resignation follows the recent formation of a coalition party named the Alliance Democratic Congress. He joins other politicians like Peter Obi, Nasir El-Rufai, David Mark, Rotimi Amaechi, and Rauf Aregbesola in the new movement, which they say will offer Nigerians a better alternative in the 2027 elections.
